THE CHILDREN WITH BLACK EYES

I was living in a single-floor apartment-style home.

A friend who used to work with me as a veterinarian visited with her child. Her child and my child were playing together.

It felt like they had been living with me for a while.

Later her husband arrived. He was polite and stayed out of the way.

My child walked outside with several other children. I could not leave the house for some reason.

I had a small balcony porch with a short brick wall. The children outside were standing still and not playing. Their eyes appeared completely black.

I asked one of the girls to bring my child to me and she pushed him toward the porch so I could grab him.

I brought him inside and said he was in trouble and could not play outside.

Soon there was commotion outside the building. A neighbor across the street had piles of junk, tires, dirt, and water outside their unit.

They accused me of taking their chair and throwing it away. I argued with them and one of the men grabbed me and warned me not to raise my voice again.

They forced their way into my home and went into another room. I could not get them out.

I called the police and the landlord arrived. At first she refused to let me in but the police made her unlock the door.

When I went inside I realized they had changed the locks and I could not leave.

I sat on the couch and told the friend’s husband that none of this felt real. Then I woke up.
